The Virgin Mary on Tuesday reappeared in a Colombian sailing merchant’s life — at the bottom of his coffee cup — 18 years after his motorboat almost capsized at sea and he started praying to the Virgin.
“I was drinking coffee and suddenly the Virgin appeared. That was around six in the morning and since that day a lot of people have come to look at the image. It came because I am devoted to the Virgen del Carmen. Nearly 18 years ago, when I was a sailor, my ship almost flipped near Nicaragua, but I put myself in the hands of the Virgen del Carmen [Virgin Mary] and she saved me,” said the sailor.
The image was found in the Caribbean town of Cartagena, at a workshop fittingly called, “The Divine Child.”
Ever since the man’s alleged discovery in his coffee cup, the image is being kept in the workshop where it was found and has been visited by local patrons.
The Virgen del Carmen is the patroness of the Carmelite order of priests and a common invocation of the Virgin Mary.
