A Colombian lawmaker Wednesday claimed that congress had “disgraced” the nation by its initial support for a gay marriage bill.
The bill recently recieved approval in the first of four debates that must be undertaken before the bill can be signed into law.
Newspaper El Espectador Wednesday reported that Marco Fidel Suarez aggressively attacked the proposed bill, claiming it contradicts Article 42 of the constitution which states marriage is between a man and a woman.
“Marriage and family is a man and a woman. As established in Article 42 of the constitution, the family is the nucleus of society, and that consists of a man and a woman,” said Suarez.
The congressman also targeted the constitutional court, claiming it is “composed of men who are obviously fallible and not of the heavenly court.”
Suarez joins an ever-growing chorus of conservative politicans who have spoken out against the proposed gay marriage bill, which needs to pass 3 more congressional debates before it can be signed into law.
