A FARC guerrilla was arrested in central Colombia Tuesday in connection to the 1999 kidnapping and murder of three U.S. citizens.
Angelo Caceras, alias “Piloso,” was arrested in the department of Meta, central Colombia.
The rebel was wanted for the murder of Ingrid Washinawatok, Lahe’ena’e Gay and Terence Freitas, three American indian rights activists.
“The victims were abducted by members of the 45th Front of the FARC on February 25, 1999, while traveling in a vehicle between Cubará and Saravena, where they were to board a plane to Bogota,” reported the prosecutor of the case, going on to say that the victims were found just over the Venezuelan border with their hands tied and their faces covered.
The three victims traveled to Colombia to campaign for the rights of Indigenous populations in the Arauca department bordering Venezuela however the FARC claimed they did not receive permission to come in to the are and were subsequently killed.
Carceras has been sentenced to 40 years in prison for his crimes.
