Police said Thursday they have arrested three men suspected of involvement in the mass murder of ten farmers in northwest Colombia last week.
National Police director Jose Roberto Leon told press that one of the three men, alias “Caracho,” was actively involved in the Santa Rosa de Osos massacre while two other suspects were arrested for their either direct or indirect involvement in the massacre.
Oscar Dario Barrera, alias Caracho, was caught a day after “Jorge 18” was accused of ordering the killings from Bellavista prison in Medellin.
Both men, who are allegedly part of a splinter group of drug trafficking organization “Los Rastrojos,” known as the “Renacentistas,” will be tried for the ghastly murders.
According to preliminary information released by Leon, Barrera and possibly the two others killed the 10 farmers working 20 miles north of Medellin.
Police have offered two working theories for a motive. Either the peasants failed to pay extortion money, or they had some role in contributing to the arrest of Jorge 18, the presumed leader of Renacentistas.
