Bogota is the 53rd most expensive city in the world for expatriates, according to Mercer´s Cost of Living survey published Tuesday.
Colombia’s capital city moved up 10 places in the ranking from one year ago. The survey covers 214 cities in five continents and assesses 200 items including food, transport, clothes, household goods and entertainment.
The Colombian capital is also the fifth most expensive metropolis for expatriates in South America. Three of the four most expensive cities are in Brazil– Sao Paulo sits in 12th position, Rio de Janeiro in 13th place and Brasilia in 45th position. Caracas, Venezuela comes in at 29 on the list.
Argentine capital Buenos Aires, like Bogota, experienced a leap in the ranking — moving from 159th to 121st position due to strong inflation, while the Cuban capital Havana dropped 46 places to rank 99th, following a weakening of the Cuban peso against the dollar.
The costliest city in the world for expatriates is Toyko, Japan while the cheapest is Karachi, Pakistan.
