Colombia’s electoral observation body warned that the country’s democratic system is “in crisis” Friday.
Election Observation Mission (MOE) Director Alejandro Barrios criticized Colombia’s municipal and departmental governments for their high rate of turnover of official posts since their inaugurations 100 days ago, newspaper El Espectador reported Friday.
Since these new governments came into effect, seven special elections have been held to replace vacated government posts.
Yopal, the capital city of Casanare Department has seen the highest rate of turnover, with 40% of the city’s elected councilors already removed from office.
Between 2007 and 2011, 25% of elected regional authorities did not fulfill their mandates.
