Four new plant species were discovered in Colombia, reported Caracol Radio Thursday.
The four plants are part of the genus Stenospermation, a plant species used by indigenous populations to treat wounds, parasites, and acne.
The new plants were discovered by National University researcher Natalia Angela Brown in the western departments of Nariño and Choco. Brown believes that this discovery will lead these plants to be used by even more indigenous populations.
“Most plants of this genus (…) only grow in certain geographic areas. But this does not mean that the existence of plants is limited to the departments surveyed. It just means there is a lack of information in some areas of the country due to lack of education,” said Brown.
At least 28 species of Stenospermation are native to Colombia, making it home to the largest number of this genus in the world.
