Fernando Botero, Colombia’s most famous painter and sculptor, was pronounced well on Wednesday after a brief stay in hospital.
Botero, famous worldwide for his distinctive painting and sculpting style, was admitted to hospital Tuesday in Rionegro, in the western Colombian district of Antioquia.
The artist reportedly fainted while in a local supermarket, then attended hospital of his own accord for routine examinations.
A hospital spokesperson confirmed that the artist “left in very good health”.
Botero expressed his appreciation for the support and messages of solidarity he has received from the people of Colombia, where he is a much loved and celebrated figure.
Though he spends much of the year in studios in Paris and Italy, Colombia’s famous export has returned with his wife, Greek sculptor Sophia Vara, to spend the Christmas season in his country house in Rionegro, close to the city of Medellin, where the artist was born in 1932.
