Gustavo Petro, elected as the next mayor of Bogota, was declared fit to take office on Wednesday, following an allegation that a previous criminal conviction might prevent him from doing so.
The prosecutor of the Administrative Tribunal of Cundinamarca said that due to lack of evidence, a legal process against Petro was unnecessary.
The matter was raised by Bogota city counselor Orlando Prada, who deemed Petro disqualified to act as the capital’s mayor due to a previous conviction.
In 1985, when Bogota’s mayor-elect was still a member of the urban guerrilla movement M-19, Petro was convicted of illegal possession by a military court.
