The Conservative Party has officially endorsed Enrique Peñalosa in his bid to become the next mayor of Bogota, Colombian media reported Wednesday.
Peñalosa’s candidacy has attracted a broad range of support, with the centrist Green Party candidate also backed by the U Party and, controversially, by ex-President Alvaro Uribe.
The ex-Bogota mayor and current candidate was first touted for Conservative support a month ago by Conservative Senator Fernando Tamayo.
However, Tamayo has recently thrown his weight behind the Gina Parody ticket, which includes ex-Bogota mayor and former Green Party presidential candidate Antanas Mockus.
The Green Party candidate is currently vying with the Progressive Movement’s Gustavo Petro for the top spot in opinion polls, with the latest showing Peñalosa with a slight advantage.
