Authorities in western Colombia seized two tons of cocaine in an operation targeting the country’s largest paramilitary successor group.
The Gaitanista Self-Defense Forces of Colombia (AGC) took an estimated 57 million dollar hit during 3 consecutive raids off the Pacific coast and inland of Colombia.
The cocaine was seized during operations conducted by The Colombian National Army and Police. The seizures took place in the Gorgona national park off the Pacific coast, the coastal waters of Nariño, and inland Nariño.
Those captured at sea took police on a high speed boat chase, but lost two of their vessels and will face charges of fabricating and trafficking illegal narcotics.
The innovative methods of concealment included hiding packages at the bottom of the sea and using dense mangrove swamps as temporary storage points, were not enough to avoid capture.
The drugs were likely being gathered and organized to transport onto Central America and the United States.
The AGC is Colombia’s most powerful drug trafficking organization in Colombia and was formed by former members of paramilitary organization AUC, which demobilized between 2003 and 2006.
