In the biggest upset of 2011’s French Open, an unseeded Colombian-Argentine doubles pair have defeated the top-seeded Bryans brothers to reach the final, the first time any Colombian will play in a Grand Slam men’s doubles final.
Cali-native and his Argentine partner Eduardo Schwank shocked Americans Bob and Mike Bryan to win in straight sets, 7-6 (7-4) 6-3.
25-year-old Cabal, with a doubles ranking of 100, becomes the first ever Colombian to reach the men’s doubles final of a Grand Slam event, and the first in any Grand Slam doubles final since 1977.
In contrast, their illustrious American opponents have a record 71 doubles titles to their name, with 10 Grand Slam victories, including the only other Grand Slam event thus far in 2011, the Australian Open.
Cabal and his partner Schwank, ranked 34th in men’s doubles, will now play the second-seeded pair of Canadian Daniel Nestor and Belarusian Max Mirnyi in the Roland Garros final.
