Ecuadorean soldiers were found with 200 camouflage, military uniforms believed to be intended for the FARC.
Local newspaper La Hora reported Wednesday that the Organized Crime Combat Unit of the Ecuadorean police captured three active duty members of the army in unauthorized possession of boxes full of 200 camouflage uniforms just south of the capital Quito.
One of the captured reportedly told investigators that the uniforms were to be delivered to five Colombian citizens who had apparently threatened them, adding that the buyers would pay $80 per uniform.
The three army soldiers were brought in front of a judge after they were unable to explain why they had the uniforms in their possession.
On Tuesday the soldiers were released because of the military’s failure to file a formal complaint.
It has been reported that the Public Ministry has opened a preliminary investigation to find the true source of the uniforms and the chain of custody that followed.
In late April, Ecuadorian police arrested five people who were driving a truck filled with 600 uniforms carrying the FARC insignia.
