The population of Colombia reached the 46 million mark at 9:00:21AM Tuesday according to the population counter of the National Statistics Agency, DANE.
Colombia’s population reached 46 million, with 97.5 men for every 100 women. Demographic experts said this is due to variations in the birth and mortality rates, as well as migration levels, according to DANE’s press release.
With the population increasing by one every minute, Colombia now has a population similar to that of Ukraine and Spain, according to the CIA World Fact Book.
Jorge Bustamente, the director of DANE, said that “The big challenge for society is gender equality.” DANE’s National Health and Demographics Survey found that women earn less even though they have more years of education and participate in the labor market more than men, according to magazine Semana.
The population by 2020 is predicted to have reached nearly 51 million people.
