A landslide in the city of Manizales, in Colombia’s coffee region, has destroyed nine homes, Caracol Radio reported Monday.
The disaster occurred in the western part of the city, when over 280,000 cubic feet of earth fell, taking with it homes, water supply networks and electricity lines. Despite the destruction, no one was killed or injured as emergency services were able to evacuate all residents safely hours before the disaster.
The volume of earth has also blocked Avenida Centenario, a main access point to the city that links it with the nearby cities of Chinchina and Pereira.
All families evacuated have been relocated to places nearby as the remaining homes that were unaffected have been left without any amenities.
Operations to clear the affected area have begun.
