Bogota‘s district comptroller has warned that more than $107 million from the district budget could be lost due to mismanagement in different government departments.
In her first week in charge after replacing the allegedly corrupt Angelo Moralesrussi, Monica Certain told W Radio Thursday that there are three main sources of financial mismanagement.
The first of which is an amount of $31 million which was erroneously issued by the Bogota Ministry of Finance, in an apparent accounting error, to an environmental protection agency called the Autonomous Regional Corporation of Cundinamarca (CAR) between 2005 – 2009. The corporation is refusing to give the money back.
Certain said a legal process of fiscal responsibility has been initiated against the city’s previous two comptrollers, as well as the directors of CAR, to try to recover funds.
The second reason Certain listed was the cancellation of the Transmilenio bus network extension on Carrera Septima, in the capital.
She warns that the decision of Mayor Samuel Moreno to halt the planned construction project of the Transmilenio could see the company contracted to undertake the work, for around $45 million, demand payment for the unfulfilled contract.
Finally, the comptroller mentioned subsidies that may continue to be paid for the next 10 years for the construction of four underground carparks in Bogota, at a cost of over $42 million.
