Colombia’s Vice President Angelino Garzon on Wednesday called on the U.S. to ratify the free trade agreement with Colombia in 2011, according to the newspaper Portafolio.
A day after President Barack Obama said he would continue to pursue pending trade deals with Colombia, South Korea and Panama, Garzon called on the U.S. to ratify the FTA in 2011.
Although Obama commented briefly on the Colombian trade agreement in Tuesday night’s State of the Union address, he did not set out a time-line for Congress to ratify it, which supporters of the agreement had been hoping for.
Garzon, who will be in Washington D.C. until Friday, has been busy promoting the FTA by visiting with US trade officials.
According to the United States Trade Representative, Garzon and U.S. Trade Representative Ron Kirk met on Monday to discuss various issues related to the U.S.-Colombia agreement.
