U.S. President Barack Obama’s administration’s priority for a free trade agreement will be on South Korea, not Colombia or Panama, reported news website Business Spectator.
The U.S.’s focus will be on winning congressional approval for the deal with South Korea before July 1, U.S. Trade Representative Ron Kirk said during a panel discussion Thursday.
The administration supports approval of the two other free trade agreements with Colombia and Panama, but it would “be a huge mistake to try to force all of the trade agreements into one lump vote with Korea,” Mr. Kirk said.
U.S. Senator John McCain expressed that he favored the free trade agreement with South Korea, Colombia and Panama passing at the same time on Colombian radio January 7.
“There’s no reason why they shouldn’t be considered and passed by the senate at the same time,” according to McCain.
