Medellin is gradually turning into a fairy tale of lights with this year’s festive decoration inspired by traditional Christmas stories and characters, newspaper El Colombiano reports.
The Christmas light display has been a tradition for the city of Medellin for over 50 years and every year residents and tourists anxiously wait to see what EPM (Empresas Publicas de Medellin) has in store for the city.
The event is the work of designers, architects, technicians and many workers who start planning the light show one year in advance and begin to set it up weeks ahead of time. Each year is more elaborate and impressive than the previous one.
This year more locations will be on display such as the Bulevar de Castilla, El Poblado and the Plaza España in Santo Domingo and at least 70 parks will display traditional stories and characters of Hans Christian Anderson and the Brothers Grimm.
One of the innovations of this year’s design is “to make items move. What we do is a kind of moving circle with colors and lights,” the architect of EPM Horacio Valencia explained.
This year EPM has put together a promotion that will tour Colombia and the U.S. Between November 11 and 20 a bus decked out with lights and decorations will tour Colombia to promote Medellin’s Christmas light event.
