Former tennis World no. 2 Andy Murray was beaten by little known Colombian star Santiago Giraldo in the 3rd round of the Madrid Masters on Thursday, according to local and international media.
Ranked 46th in the world, Giraldo beat Murray in straight sets (6-3, 6-2) to reach the championship’s quarterfinals and face Spain’s Roberto Bautista Agut.
The Colombian, who had never beaten a top-10 player before overpowering Murray, came into the match on the back of wins over Australian Lleyton Hewitt and Frenchman Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the earlier rounds.
In a statement after the match, Murray stated that a split from his coach Ivan Lendl had led to his “inconsistent” play.
Originally from the city of Pereira in western Colombia, Giraldo now lives and trains in the US and is known by the nickname “Santi.”
