Bus commuters in the Colombia’s capital Bogota can now enjoy 15 Wi-fi hotspots for free from Thursday thanks to a city initiative.
These 15 points on the TransMilenio system have the free “Bus-fi” at speed of 10MB and with a coverage of a quarter of a mile. The service will gradually be extended to other stations and portal system.
The City of Bogota and the transit authorities told Colombian newspaper El Espectador that the focus was on strengthening universal access to ICT, bridging the digital divide, and thus consolidate Bogota as an inclusive city that generates economic development , social and cultural population.
Internet access in Colombia is expanding rapidly and the country is already in 5th place for internet connectivity in South America and 6th place for Latin America.

The country’s minister for Information and Communication Technology, Diego Molano, said this week that almost 80% of Colombians are connected to broadband internet, which in Colombia means a connection of more than 1Mbps.
