The police will arrive on Monday and be welcomed with a celebration in Parque Tercer Milenio attended by the new mayor and President Juan Manuel Santos.
The additional forces will be used to reinforce security on the transportation system as well as strategic points throughout the city.
An area of particular focus for authorities will be Calle 26, where a priest was killed in an apparent cell phone robbery on May 13.
According to reports, better lighting is on the agenda to help increase safety in this part of the city.
