4 students, 3 soldiers injured in school attack

by Travis Mannon August 26, 2011

Colombia news - explosion

An unidentified woman set off an explosive outside of a school Friday morning in the southwest department of Nariño, wounding four students and three soldiers, newspaper El Espectador reported.

The woman apparently threw the explosive when an army patrol was passing by the school. The woman reportedly intended to attack the soldiers, but “the bomb did not explode at the moment [the soldiers] were passing because it delayed some 40 seconds,” according to the mayor.

However, the explosion hit students as well as the targeted soldiers. The wounded were transferred by helicopter to Pasto, the capital city of Nariño.

El Tiempo reported that authorities arrested a woman they believe to be responsible. They suspect she could be a member of the leftist guerrilla group FARC.

This is reportedly the third attack this a week in the department.
