4 FARC guerrillas, 1 soldier killed in southern Colombia combat

by Simon Willis September 13, 2012

Four FARC guerrillas and one soldier have been killed during a series of fierce combats in southern Colombia on Thursday.

Two soldiers were also injured and two guerrillas captured as heavy fighting broke out between the military and members of the FARC in the Colombian departments of Caquetá and Huila.

The soldier killed was identified as Mauel Gutierezz Serna, an officer of the Joint Task Force Omega, while the two wounded soldiers were taken to a clinic in the capital of Caqueta.

Among the FARC guerrillas killed was one member of the 15th Front Leonel Moreno, alias “Gerardo” or “Nicuro.”

Nicuro had been with the organization for about 12 years and was involved in extortion against local farmers and merchants.

In Huila the military confirmed that the three guerrillas killed were members of the FARC’s 55th Front, which has reportedly increased its involvement in planting explosive devices, extortion, kidnappings and terrorist attacks, reported Radio Santa Fe.
