A 14-year-old girl from central Colombia has committed suicide at school in front of her peers, local media reported Wednesday.
Sixth-grader Brigit Lorena Gonzalez fatally shot herself in the stomach at the local high school of the town of Mariquita, Tolima.
According to local newspaper El Nuevo Dia, the girl initially threatened fellow students and pointed her .38 revolver at the head of one of her peers, shot in the air and then shot herself in the stomach when the school bell rang.
Several teachers, psychologists and policemen tried to convince the girl to drop the gun without success.
After the shooting, the girl was rushed to the hospital where she was pronounced dead on arrival, Hernando Elias Montoya, the manager of the hospital, told the newspaper.
Montoya added that 19 of her peers who saw the suicide were taken to the hospital in shock. One of the boys had to be given drugs to calm him.
