10 prosecutors investigating ‘false demobilizations’ dismissed

by Tom Heyden April 20, 2011

colombia news - viviane morales

Colombia’s Prosecutor General Viviane Morales has relieved 10 prosecutors belonging to the Justice and Peace Unit of their posts, Caracol Radio reported Wednesday.

The various dismissed prosecutors were in charge of proceedings against demobilized paramilitaries, as well as the alleged “false demobilizations” and the DAS wiretapping scandals under the previous government.

One of the prosecutors, Carlos Augusto Aya Vega, specifically was running the investigation into the alleged “false demobilizations” of the Cacique Gaitana Bloc of the FARC in March, 2006.

The removal of over one-sixth of the 59 prosecutors currently working at the Justice and Peace Unit has not yet been explained by Morales. It comes after she appointed a new director of the Justice and Peace Unit in March as she apparently looks to stamp her mark on the department since her appointment on January 12, 2011.
