Preview: Liga Postobon week 16

Deportes Tolima and Santa Fe continue their battle for first place while several other teams fight for the final few spots in the second round of the Colombian Liga Postobon.

Friday

Only one match is scheduled to be played on Friday as leaders Deportes Tolima take on Independiente Medellin in Antioquia’s capital city.

Both teams have a good reason to finish this game with a good result. Tolima will want to win in order to remain on top, as the first place at the end of the season guarantees several advantages in the next round.

Medellin meanwhile, know that anything but a win will likely mean that the next round is no longer in sight.

Medellin have struggled in recent games with Tolima, losing three of the last four meetings. Only the most recent clash ended in a draw.

Saturday

Two games are particularly crucial on Saturday, as eighth-placed Deportivo Cali visit Envigado while ninth-placed Millonarios play away to La Equidad in a Bogota derby.

Both Cali and Millonarios have 21 points but Cali’s goal record is slightly better.

Cali have shown a decent shape in recent games, with nine points earned from their last five games. The match at Envigado is likely to add another three points as the home side haven’t been quite as impressive and are currently in penultimate spot.

Millonarios face a tougher challenge at La Equidad, who themselves are in seventh position and will need a good result in order to limit the pressure in the remaining two rounds.

That being said, Millonarios are usually the more successful side in direct league encounters with La Equidad.

Sunday

Santa Fe receive Once Caldas on Sunday, in an attempt to either put pressure on Tolima or even reconquer the top spot, depending on Friday’s result.

But Santa Fe will not be the only team looking for a win as Once Caldas, currently in third place, have a very realistic chance of finishing first or second themselves. The gap with Tolima is only three points.

The last two times these two teams met in the league, Santa Fe ended up taking the three points.
