Paramilitary warlord confirms giving US$50,000 to politician

Paramilitary warlord Freddy ‘El Aleman’ Rendon Herrera confirmed on Monday that he had given COP100 million (US$50,000) to Ruben Dario Quintero, just before the latter was elected Senator for Cambio Radical in 2002.

The prominent leader of paramilitary organization AUC and commander of the paramilitaries’ Elmer Cardenas bloc testified before a special prosecutor in charge of paramilitary crimes, where he said the money was delivered to the politician in Medellin at the request of a person close to Quintero.

‘El Aleman’ also said he met personally with the former Senator.

Ruben Dario Quintero is currently in jail on parapolitics charges. Before entering Congress, the paisa politician was the personal secretary of Alvaro Uribe during the period that the now President was Governor of Antioquia.
