Paramilitary chief arrested in Medellin

Medellin police arrested the suspected military commander of neo-paramilitary group “Los Urabeños,” once led by feared paramilitary drug lord “Don Mario.”

Carlos Evertos Higuita Usuga, alias “Chejo,” was arrested in the up-scale neighborhood of Laureles, in the west of the Antioquia department capital.

According to the authorities, Higuita Usuga was in charge of the paramilitary group’s drug trafficking activities in the south of the Bolivar department and the Magdalena Medio region.

Higuita Usuga founded the Urabeños together with Daniel Rendon, alias “Don Mario,” following the official demobilization of paramilitary organization AUC.

Don Mario, at the time of his arrest considered one of the big three drug lords of the country, was captured by police in April 2009 and is now in jail in the U.S.
