Liberals lead Medellin mayor election polls

The latest opinion polls show Liberal Party candidate Anibal Gaviria is leading the race to become the next mayor of Medellin.

Former Governor of Antioquia Gaviria currently has the support of 39% of voters, according to the poll conducted by Ipsos Napoleon Franco on behalf of RCN, El Colombiano and La Semana.

Gaviria is campaigning together with former Medellin mayor and governmental hopeful Sergio Fajardo, who is leading the polls in the Antioquia department.

Luis Perez Gutierrez, the former mayor endorsed by Cambio Radical, is trailing behind in second place with 22% of the vote, while ex-president Alvaro Uribe’s preferred candidate, Federico Gutierrez, is a distant third with just 6% of the vote.

Compared to last month’s Datexco poll, all three candidates have lost support but the gap between Gaviria and Gutierrez has increased.

The poll also showed 24% of voters still did not know who they are going to vote for, while 4% intend not to vote for any candidate.
