Drug seizure in western Colombia

Authorities seized and destroyed 3,500kg of marijuana and a nursery of coca plants in two separate operations in western Colombia, reported local media Wednesday.

In first of the seizures police found 2,000 kilos of marijuana and 1,500 coca plants allegedly belonging to the neoparamilitary gang Los Urabeños, one of Colombia’s most powerful drug trafficking organizations. The storehouse was located in the municipality of Dabeiba in the central western department of Antioquia.

In another operation in the southwestern department of Cauca, authorities intercepted a truck carrying 1,500kg of marijuana.

The truck is believed to belong to the Urabeños’s rival drug gang Los Rastrojos and was entering the southern city of Cali when police made the seizure.

Inside the cargo authorities discovered cardboard boxes containing 1,480 packages of various colors and sizes meant to disguise the narcotics.

The driver of the vehicle is being charged with drug possession and trafficking.
