Suspected Urabeños plot to kill 11 prosecutors uncovered

Colombian authorities uncovered an alleged plot to kill 11 prosecutors hatched by the neo-paramilitary group, “Los Urabeños,” Radio Caracol reported Tuesday.

The hitlist included prosecutors from several different cities who are currently investigating the drug trafficking organization.

According to the radio station, the Urabeños had detailed information about the daily movements of the attorneys. Members of the criminal gang allegedly purchased the necessary arms and ammunition to carry out the assassinations.

The Urabeños are one of Colombia’s most powerful drug trafficking organizations and the largest to emerge from the now-demobilized paramilitary group, the AUC.

The Urabeños are suspected of having at least 2,000 members and are mostly active along Colombia’s Caribbean coast, but have made inroads into Medellin and other areas in the northwestern department of Antioquia at the expense of the city’s other drug-trafficking gangs.
