Uribe’s cousin found dead, kidnapping fears rejected

Roberto Luis Velez

The cousin of former Colombia President Alvaro Uribe was found dead on Sunday. His disappearance a few days before had sparked speculation over a possible kidnapping.

The body of 60-year-old Roberto Luis Velez Ochoa was found a few hundred meters from his home in the southeast of Antioquia state, said Santiago Londoño, the state’s government secretary.

Velez had disappeared on Thursday, resulting in speculation over a possible kidnapping.

However, both Londoño and the Antioquia Police Commissioner, Corporal Gustavo Chavarro, told press that Velez was most likely to have died of natural causes as no signs of a violent struggle were found on his body.

The cause of death will be determined in Medellin, where the coroner’s office will perform an autopsy.
