Supreme Court in talks with US about paramilitary confessions

Colombia’s Supreme Court contacted the United States embassy in
Bogota to request the transcriptions of confessions made by extradited
paramilitary leaders.

According to Piedad Cordoba and Ivan Cepeda, who had talks with the extradited AUC heads this weekend, say the paramilitaries already confessed many crimes to U.S. prosecutors, who now also know the names of businessmen and politicians who benefited from crimes committed by the AUC death squads.

Court president Augusto Ibañez told Caracol Radio thathe hopes to have thetestimonies in his possession soon to see what Congressmen should be prosecuted for ‘parapolitics’.

More than seventy former members of Colombia’s Congress, mostly from President Alvaro Uribe’s coalition, already are being investigated for their alleged ties to paramilitary death squads.
