Preview: Liga Postobon week 8

The Colombian Liga Postobon continues this weekend with several clashes that could reshape the top of the table.

The action starts on Friday with fifth-place La Equidad hosting troubled America de Cali in Bogota. La Equidad are only three points away from the top and a home win would likely allow them to climb one or more spots. America are in 12th position but only one point away from the top eight, making this clash just as vital for them.

The most important game of the weekend takes place on Saturday as Deportes Tolima, currently in third place, host leaders Santa Fe in Ibague. If Tolima win this match, they will certainly surpass Santa Fe but whether they would also take the lead in the classification depends on results elsewhere. The last time these two teams met, six months ago, Santa Fe won 3-2.

In Saturday’s only other game, eighth-placed Atletico Nacional receive Boyaca Chico who are currently in ninth place. The winner of this game will almost certainly finish the week in the top eight, but a defeat could turn out to be fatal.

On Sunday, second-placed Cucuta Deportivo hope to jump to the top of the league with a good result at Deportes Quindio, who themselves occupy the sixth spot. In recent years, Cucuta have been extremely dominant against Quindio. Of the last nine encounters, eight were won and one ended undecided.

Fourth-placed Atletico Huila play later in the afternoon and visit a troubled Millonarios side in Bogota.

The match between Atletico Junior and Independiente Medellin would be a big fixture in Colombian soccer if the two sides weren’t struggling the way they do. Medellin are currently in tenth place and Junior, who won only one of six matches, are 14th. Medellin will be most motivated to get a win here in order to keep their campaign alive.

In Sunday’s other games, Deportivo Cali host Once Caldas, Deportivo Pereira receive Cortulua and Real Cartagena, seventh in the league, play away to Envigado.
