Medellin receives 30,000 gifts for the city’s birthday

Medellin is turning 335 and has received 30,000 gifts from loving citizens.

The capital city of the department of Antioquia will celebrate its birthday on November 2, and on a special website, citizens have a chance to dedicate letters, songs, drawings and poems in honor of the city. The site is run by the Office of the Mayor of Medellin in order to involve citizens in the upcoming birthday celebrations, and “generate a sense of belonging and pride in Medellin.”

People of all ages have posted tributes to the city in celebration of over three centuries. Many have left simple messages saying things like “Happy Birthday,” “I love you” and “Peace,” while others leave more detailed messages with their hopes for the future of the city.

Not all messages are full of happiness, but focus on the reality that the lives of all of Medellin’s citizens are not perfect. Luz Mary said, “I would like to give Medellin many good things but I can’t because in the city there is a lot of unemployment and insecurity that tarnish all the good things the city has and deserves. I have only the tears I shed every day for Medellin.”

As a part of the celebrations, 10 different sites across the city will be specially decorated.
