Medellin’s Teatro Metropolitano hosts two epic operas by Italian composer Giussepe Verdi: “Otello” and “Un Ballo in Maschera” showing from September 9-23.
Verdi’s “Otello” is an opera in four acts that is based on William Shakespeare’s play “Othello.” It was Verdi’s penultimate opera and was first performed at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan, Italy on February 5, 1887. The performance’s Orchestra Director is Miguel Ortega and the Scene Director is Walter Neiva, from Brazil.
“Un Ballo in Maschera,” or “A Masked Ball” is an opera in three acts, loosely based on the historical assassination of King Gustav III of Sweden. However, due to censorship regulations in Naples and Rome, as well as the political situation in France in the 1900’s the work was modified, turning the Swedish King into an English Governor in North America. The opera’s Orchestra Director is Dante Raniera and the Scene Director is Ognian Draganoff, from Bulgaria.
The music will be interpreted by the Symphonic Orchestra of EAFIT, the Professional Chorus of the Fundacion Prolirica of Antioquia, Grupo Vocal Contrapunto, and the Estudio Polifónico of Medellín.
Among international guest performers are the Italian tenor Gianluca Zampieri, United States soprano April Evans, the Spanish directors of Orquesta Miquel Ortega, and Argentinean Dante Ranieri.
Teatro Metropolitano is located at Calle 41, Numero 57-30. Ticket prices range from $15 to $36 dollars.
