Former congressman arrested for ‘parapolitics’

Former congressman Jesus Doval was arrested Tuesday for his alleged ties to paramilitary groups.

Doval was arrested in his home in Apartado, Antioquia.

The former Congress representative of the coalition Cambio Radical party will be questioned regarding his alleged ties with the Elmer Cardenas bloc of the AUC, led by now-demobilized paramilitary Freddy Rendon Herrera, alias “El Aleman.”

Doval is also accused of supporting an alliance between business and political leaders and the paramilitaries in the area when he was mayor of Carepa.

After his arrest, the former congressman was transfered to the Prosecutor General’s Office in Bogota.

Some 80 sitting and former congressmen have been arrested over the past two years in what is called the “parapolitics” scandal, in which the links between politicians’ links right wing paramilitary death squads were revealed.
