Former Bogota mayor announces aim to run again

Former Mayor of Bogota Jaime Castro has confirmed that he intends to run again in the upcoming elections, although his Liberal Party has already declared its support for David Luna, newspaper El Espectador reported Tuesday.

Castro, a recognized Liberal Party member, defeated current Bogota mayoral front-runner Enrique Peñalosa to become mayor of the capital back in 1992, serving until January 1, 1995, when he was succeeded by Antanas Mockus.

“I have not launched nor anything like it. We are working on that,” said the 73-year-old, adding that “we are going slowly but surely” in the aspiration to become Bogota’s mayor once again.

The former mayor would not be drawn upon which party or movement he intended to run with, although his Liberal Party colleagues have already thrown their weight behind David Luna.
