‘Fajardo to run for Antioquia governor’

Following failed attempts to become Colombia’s president and vice president in 2010, former Medellin Mayor Sergio Fajardo will run for governor of the Antioquia department in 2011, political website La Silla Vacia reported Monday.

According to the website, the prominent Green Party member will lead the party’s campaign in the department during the 2011 local and departmental elections.

The Green Party is working on a coalition with members of the Liberal Party in Antioquia, to secure a united front against political allies of former President Alvaro Uribe, who will be led by former Interior and Justice Minister Fabio Valencia Cossio or former Agriculture Minister Andres Felipe Arias, La Silla Vacia said.

Colombia will take to the polls in October 2011 for the election of local and departmental leaders.

Fajardo, mayor of Medellin between 2004 and 2007, unsuccessfully took part in the congressional and presidential elections earlier this year.
