Colombia’s Prosecutor General replaces top officials

Colombia’s Prosecutor General on Monday replaced a number of key staff at a time her office is under fire over ongoing investigations against prominent members of former President Alvaro Uribe’s administration.

Prosecutor General Viviane Morales announced the immediate replacement of Deputy Prosecutor General Juan Carlos Forero with Wilson Alejandro Martinez.

Martinez previously was the Prosecutor General’s Office’s delegate before the Supreme Court.

Morales replaced eight more high-level officials in charge of administration, finance and disciplinary control in both the Bogota headquarters and in regional and local offices in the departments of Antioquia, Cundinamarca, Meta and La Guajira.

In an interview with newscast CM&, Morales said that the mass replacement of officials was nothing out of the ordinary and the product of a first-year evaluation and judicial obligations.

The Prosecutor General’s Office and Morales in particular are under great pressure by allies of Uribe, who has seen a number of key members of his administration sent to jail or under investigation for high profile corruption scandals.
