Colombian soccer league week 14 preview

Week 14 of the Liga Postobon sees the top two teams face the bottom two, while Deportivo Cali will be looking to extend their seven game unbeaten streak with a win against Medellin’s Envigado, one place below them.

The weekend’s action kicks off in Bogota with La Equidad taking on reigning champions Junior de Barranquilla Friday at the Estadio Metropolitano de Techo. La Equidad have enjoyed a great start to the season, sitting in fourth and equal on points with second placed Santa Fe. Junior are faring less well, having lost three of their last five league games landing them in 10th place.

Sunday afternoon sees seventh placed Deportivo Cali take on eigth placed Envigado. Both teams will be hoping to stay within the vital top eight and boost their playoff hopes. The team from Colombia’s third city are slowly turning around their poor start to the season, having not lost in seven games. The historic championship contenders are one point above Envigado, whose form has suffered somewhat in recent weeks with only one win in their last five games.

Enjoying a four point lead at the top of the league, Deportes Tolima face bottom club Cucuta Deportivo in Ibague Sunday. While Tolima have not lost in the league since mid-February, Cucuta have lost six of their last seven. The team from Norte de Santander Department will be buoyed somewhat by last week’s win against Bogota giants Millonarios F.C.

After their midweek draw with Medellin based Nacional, Bogota’s current top team Santa Fe will be heading to the Coffee Region on Sunday evening to face Once Caldas, who are sitting second bottom. The “Red Express” will be looking for an easy win to shorten the four point gap between them and Tolima. But 2004 Copa Libertadores winners Caldas may prove difficult opponents as they are desperately in need of points and have won three of their last five at home.
