Colombian soccer league week 12 preview

Colombia’s Liga Postobon week 12 brings together Bogota clubs La Equidad and Santa Fe, while Huila host Junior as they look to reclaim top spot from Tolima, who face a difficult tie away to Millionarios.

The Friday kickoff takes league strugglers Deportes Quindio to Colombia’s third-largest city, where they meet Deportivo Cali, whose run of six games without a loss has seen them break in to the top eight recently.

Saturday afternoon brings another Medellin-area derby, as Independiente make the short trip to satellite town Itagui. Medellin go seeking a return to winning ways, after two consecutive defeats arrested an upturn in form which accompanied the February appointment of former national team coach Hernan Dario Gomez. Itagui need to win to remain in touch with the leading pack and have only lost at home once this season.

Meanwhile, basement club Cacuta Deportivo travel to Boyaca Chico in a relegation tussle. Both teams are without a win in five league games, although Cacuta’s failure to win away from home this season should stand Boyaca Chico in good stead.

Saturday evening sees the league’s top two in action, as Huila host 2011 champions Junior, whose patchy recent form has seen them drop out of the top eight, while Tolima travel to Bogota to face giants Millionarios, whose own inconsistency makes a results prediction difficult.

Sunday afternoon hands Once Caldas the opportunity to drag themselves from the danger zone, as they host an Envigado team without a win in eight games, while the Bogota derby offers La Equidad the potential to go top of the league, should they defeat Santa Fe and the top two drop points. Mid-table Real Cartagena host Deportivo Pasto, who have scored nine goals in their last three games.

The weekend’s action is rounded off with the visit of Patriotas to Medellin, where they face Atletico Nacional. The green and whites must focus on this week’s wins in the Copa Libertadores and Copa Colombiana if they are to overturn a shocking run of form in the league which has seen them drop to 14th.
