Colombian departments prosper due to mining

The central Colombian departments of Meta and Casanare and the northern Cesar department prospered last year due to mining activities, revealed the country’s statistics office, Dane on Thursday.

In 2011 the GDP of mining departments grew, Meta by 19.7%, Casanare by 15.1% and Cesar by 10.8%

A reduction in GDP in the northwestern Cordoba and the Northeastern Arauca departments was registered a due to a decrease in nickel and oil production. Cordoba registered a drop of 1.3% and Arauca 4.1%

These decreases were due to a drop in the production of ferronickel in Cordoba, and a drop in the production of the important oil fields in Arauca.

Last year the economy in Bogota grew by 6% and Antioquia by 6.1%
