Colombia soccer league week 8 review

Millionarios tasted defeat for the first time in week 8 of Colombia’s top soccer league, but remained at the top as Junior fell at Boyaca Chico.

Yessi Mena grabbed the only goal of the game from the penalty spot to hand Itagui victory over the Bogota giants and inflict their first defeat in the Liga Postobon II-2012.

The three points moves Itagui up to fourth and only three points behind Millionarios.

Junior went into the final game on Sunday evening with Boyaca Chico knowing that a win would take them to the summit of the league, but they left La Independencia stadium empty handed after a 1-0 defeat.

Atletico Nacional were once again left frustrated as they failed to overcome Deportes Quindio on their own turf.

The Medellin side had looked on course for a vital three points when Fernando Uribe opened the scoring in the first half.

However Nacional’s frailties at the back were once again exposed as Juan Fernando Caicedo struck with 13 minutes left to deny the home side what would have been only their third win of the campaign.

It was a much better weekend for Nacional’s city rivals Independiente Medellin with William Arboleda scoring from the penalty spot to ensure a 1-0 victory over Once Caldas.

The big movers this weekend were Cucuta Deportivo, who climbed to second – two points behind Millionaires – thanks to a 1-0 victory at Real Cartagena.

Defending champions Santa Fe continued their surge up the table with a 2-1 victory over Patriotas, their second win out of three games, sending them up to 11th and ever closer to that top eight.

Meanwhile at the bottom of the table Atletico Huila fans finally had something to shout about as they saw their team record a first victory in 16 games with a 1-0 success at home to Envigado.
