Attempt to impeach Bogota mayor not supported by U Party

Senator Aurelio Iragorri met with Bogota Mayor Gustavo Petro to say that the coalition U Party does not support the impeachment initiative., local media reported.

Iragori allegedly notified Petro that the impeachment initiative began by Miguel Gomez, a congressman of Iragorri’s own party, does not have the U Party’s support, and that Gomez is acting alone.

Iragorri took the time to promise a future meeting with Petro next week, however, to discuss the issues facing Colombia’s capital.

The news comes as another blow to Gomez’s impeachment effort, as even Petro’s staunchest critics have refused to support the initiative.

The national government on Tuesday also made clear their support for the democratically elected mayor’s right to govern, when the presidential advisor on Bogota, Gina Parody, expressed that “we [the national government] are here with open arms”.

Petro, a former left wing guerilla leader, has faced strong criticism over ongoing problems with transport and the municipilization of trash collection.
