Key member of Medellin gang under house arrest

One of Colombia’s key members of the Medellin-based criminal gang “Oficina de Envigado” has been granted house arrest on Thursday.

Victor Manuel Quintero Alzate, alias “Colas,” was allegedly identified as a confidante of crime boss “Sebastian” who is currently serving a jail sentence for rebellion and drug-trafficking.

Colas, who was arrested in August in a luxurious Medellin apartment, must sign a document promising to stay confined to his residence and promising good behavior.

In the operation a pistol, revolver, ammunition and more than $25,000 were seized, along with nine mobile phones. Colas is said to have been responsible for obtaining and handling weapons for the notorious gang, considered to be one of the most powerful criminal organizations in Colombia, controlling most of the drug trade and extortion in Colombia’s second largest city.

On Monday Sebastian, the leader of the feared Oficina de Envigado, was transferred to a maximum security prison as he was allegedly continuing to commit crimes from his jail cell in the Pitoca prison of the capital Bogota.
