Colombian police capture son of former AUC top commander

The son of notorious former AUC top commander Ramon Isaza has been captured by police in central Colombia on Friday, said police sources.

Ovidio Isaza, alias “Roque,” was caught in the central department of Caldas and could face charges relating to 87 crimes which he is reported to have committed after the AUC demobilization process in 2006.

Despite the demobilization, Roque is known to have continued committing crimes in the northern Colombian department of Magdalena, which his father and brothers held power over for more than a decade prior to 2006.

Roque was excluded from the Justice and Peace process, which says that demobilized paramilitaries may only receive a maximum sentence of eight years, as he continually violated his court commitments and failed to turn up to obligatory hearings to confess all of his crimes.

His father Ramon, alias “El Viejo,” is currently detained in a high security prison in the capital Bogota but has lost his memory according to his lawyer.

“El Viejo” previously set up the Autodefensas Campesinas of Magdelena Media (ACMM) wing of the AUC which committed horrific crimes in the Caldas, Antioquia, Cundinamarca and Tolima departments between 1996 and 2004.

The ACMM demobilized in 2006 under the Justice and Peace demobilization process along with other AUC paramilitary groups. Members admitted to 520 crimes including torture, forced disappearance, displacement and terrorism; 237 cases of violence and 19 massacres in which 370 people died. “El Viejo,” who is now in jail in Bogota, has personally admitted to killing 91 people.
