Alleged leader of ‘Office of Envigado’ murdered

An alleged leader of paramilitary group ‘Office of Envigado’ was found murdered north of Medellin.

Fabio Leon Velez Correa, alias ‘Nito’, was assassinated together with his bodyguard Jair Alexander Castaño in a farmhouse near the town of Rionegro Wednesday. However, the police only identified one of the victims as an alleged leader of the ‘Office of Envigado’ on Friday.

The Police of Antioquia believes ‘Nito’ was murdered because of an internal vendetta and by a trusted person. “The [crime scene] shows no signs of violence that indicate the murderers surprised their victims. In the house were several glasses and bottles,” one of the investigators told newspaper El Colombiano.

‘Nito’ and his bodyguard “were assassinated with 9 and 7.65 millimeter pistols, with a silencer so that the neighbors did not hear what was happening,” police commander, colonel Jorge Andres Rodriguez Borbon, said.

The alleged paramilitary leader controlled the drug trafficking routes in Antioquia, Cordoba and Sucre, the police said. Authorities had offered a 50 million peso (US$25,000) reward for information leading to the arrest ‘Nito’.
