407 Colombian children murdered in 2011: Police

Colombian police announced that 407 minors have been killed in the first five months of 2011.

A report from the General Direction of the Police released Monday said that from January 1 to May 29, 407 minors have been assassinated, and 2,236 have suffered personal injury due to violence.

In addition, 931 children under the age of 14 were reported victims of sexual abuse and 706 minors were the victims of violence in their homes.

The police report also provides statistics for minors involved in crime. A reported 10,333 minors have been captured for possible involvement in crimes ranging from drug trafficking to robbery to murder. Caracol Radio reports that most of the children that remain in police custody are among the 186 accused murderers.

Bogota, Cali, Medellin, Bucaramanga, Pereira and Armenia are listed in the report as the cities with the greatest juvenile delinquency problems.
